Description

The rich phenomenology displayed by transient black hole X-ray binaries during outbursts offers a powerful probe of accretion physics. I will summarize our current understanding of the evolution of the X-ray spectrum across accretion states, with particular emphasis on the changing geometry of the inner accretion flow as traced by the thermal, Comptonized, and reflection components. The connection between spectral evolution and X-ray variability will also be briefly discussed, highlighting how the combination of spectroscopy and timing provides key insights into the accretion process.
