This paper offers the first systematic reconstruction of Carlo Dell’Acqua’s career and examines the gradual making of an Italian manufactory for precision scientific instruments. Dell’Acqua was a Milanese instrument maker whose activity can be traced through an unusually rich corpus of evidence: unpublished manuscripts from the archive of the present-day Liceo Beccaria, formerly the Liceo di S. Alessandro in Milan; five catalogues issued between 1847 and 1863; and signed instruments preserved mainly in northern Italian collections. Moving beyond the traditional invisibility of instrument makers in the history of science, the paper follows the material and institutional settings in which he operated: workshop, physics cabinet, observatory, printed catalogue and post-Unification manufactory. Beginning with the gold-medal artists’ mannequins produced with Stefano Ceruti in 1828, it traces Dell’Acqua’s transition to scientific instrument making: Angelo Bellani’s caloric collector in 1836, his documented passage from provisional to permanent mechanic of the S. Alessandro physics cabinet between 1837 and 1839, his electro-magnetic induction apparatus c. 1840, and his pneumatic, meteorological and electro-medical apparatus. Special attention is given to the catalogues as evidence of the expansion of his workshop into a repertory for physics, chemistry, geodesy, meteorology, telegraphy and teaching. The final section examines the Tecnomasio Italiano, co-founded in 1864 by Dell’Acqua, Luigi Longoni and Alessandro Duroni in response to the perceived weakness of Italian precision manufacture. The paper argues that an instrument maker could become an indispensable, yet often overlooked, agent of experimental culture, turning local and regional scientific needs into durable, reproducible and marketable apparatus.
