After the Italian Unification, meteorology was rapidly organized on an institutional basis with the establishment of the Ufficio Centrale di Meteorologia (UCM). Geodynamics followed a different path: still an emerging discipline, it initially depended on the private initiative of researchers such as Michele Stefano De Rossi (1834-1898), who from 1873 promoted a national network of seismic observations and the journal Bullettino del Vulcanismo Italiano. The earthquakes that struck the Ischia Island (Naples Province) in 1881 and 1883 prompted direct state intervention: by Regio Decreto of 20 December 1883, the Regia Commissione Geodinamica was established to organize a national seismic service. Following its decisions, the observatories of Rocca di Papa (Rome Province) and Ischia were developed. The latter were designed by Giulio Grablovitz (1846-1928), an emerging figure in Italian geophysics, between 1884 and 1891 at Casamicciola and Ischia Porto. Their construction faced technical, financial, and bureaucratic difficulties that required the involvement of several ministries and the UCM directed by Pietro Tacchini (1838-1905). The 1883 earthquake also stimulated interest in the Earth Sciences and encouraged efforts to address public concerns raised by the disaster. The subject gained political support during the Esposizione Generale Italiana 1884, where a pavilion dedicated to meteorology and geodynamics was established. It included an exhibition section with instruments, records, maps, photographs, and publications, together with a functioning observatory open to the public, reflecting a remarkably forward-looking approach to scientific dissemination for the period. Intended to promote scientific dissemination, the initiative mobilized substantial economic and intellectual resources.
