Description

The symmetry techniques of L. Carnot, Lagrange and Hamilton are revisited in the light of the two dichotomies of foundations of theoretical physics, i.e. theoretical organization and infinity. Their mutual relationships are highlighted and their differences from the Newtonian paradigm are emphasized.
