Description

The introduction of panoramic infrared detector arrays about 30 years ago has transformed our understanding of the Universe, from its fundamental physical processes to the origin and evolution of galaxies, stars, and planetary systems. Space missions designed to exploit the unique advantages of the cosmic environment have driven the development of successive generations of detectors with increasingly demanding performance requirements. By reviewing the history of these developments and the current state of the art, we can identify the technological advances that will enable the next generation of space telescopes.
