Code of conduct

CODE OF CONDUCT

“Oltre i confini: equità e inclusione nella cultura scientifica” is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive experience for all participants.

This code of conduct outlines the expectations for participants during the event, as well as the steps for reporting unacceptable behavior. Honoring the following code of conduct will contribute to building a welcoming and inspiring community. We ask you to read and respect the code of conduct, thereby contributing to an atmosphere of collaboration and constructive exchange.

Professional Conduct

  • We commit to adopting a kind and respectful behavior.
  • We shall avoid making assumptions about how people wish to be referred to, addressed, or treated. When in doubt, we shall follow the best practice of asking directly to ensure that every choice is respectful and that the interaction is pleasant for all parties involved.
  • We welcome discussion with openness and curiosity: different opinions enrich dialogue when expressed with respect and a constructive spirit. We criticize ideas, not people.
  • Derogatory or belittling comments regarding a person’s work are unacceptable.
  • Harassment, microaggressions, bullying, discrimination, or intimidation will not be tolerated. Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.

Harassment includes but is not limited to:

  • Inappropriate or intimidating behavior and/or language and/or threats of violence
  • Unwelcome jokes
  • Unwanted touching or attention
  • Photography/videos without permission
  • Stalking
  • Offensive, derogatory, or belittling comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, pregnancy status, political affiliation, marital status, body size, age, ethnicity, national origin, nationality, immigration status, language, religion or lack thereof, or any other identity marker
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices

Diversity Statement

We commit to treating everyone as fairly and equally as possible. Whenever a person has made a mistake, we expect them to take responsibility for it. If someone has been harmed or offended, it is our responsibility to listen carefully and respectfully and do our best to right the wrong, keeping reports anonymous for those who request so.

Although this list cannot be exhaustive, we explicitly honor diversity in age, gender, gender identity or expression, culture, ethnicity, language, national origin, political beliefs, profession, race, religion, sexual orientation, physical and cognitive abilities, socioeconomic status, and technical ability. We will not tolerate discrimination based on any of the protected characteristics above.

Reporting Issues

Should you experience or witness unacceptable behavior, either in general or specifically referring to what is mentioned above, please report it via email to the organizing committee: oltreiconfini@inaf.it.

All reports will be handled with discretion. In your report, please include:

  • Your contact information
  • Names (real, nicknames, or pseudonyms) of any individuals involved, including witnesses (if any)
  • A detailed account of what happened

After filing a report, a representative from the organizing committee will contact you personally, review the incident, follow up with any additional questions, and make a decision on how to respond. If the person who is harassing you is part of the response team, the report will be managed by other members of the organizing committee.

If the complaint originates from a member of the response team, they shall reach out to a different member of the response team or organizing committee.

We will respect confidentiality requests to protect the person filing the report and all people involved.
