ABSTRACT

APACHE: an European project for preventive conservation

The Apache project aims to develop effective and affordable preventive conservation solutions for museums, galleries, libraries, and archives. The research will focus on designing and realizing collaborative decision-making tools for preventive maintenance as well as microclimate sensors and active and intelligent storage crates, archive boxes and display cases to improve storage and exhibition. The talk will deal with the participation in the project from a museum point of view.

Taking part in such a project means, for a museum with a scientific historical heritage, to put its activity in the field of preventive conservation under analysis and to consider the representativeness level within the museums community.

From this point of view, it is crucial to confront and share ideas, experiences and needs. The occasion is the outcome of one of the first steps of the project: a survey on needs and challenges for collections display and storage.
