ABSTRACT

Ten Years Later: Medium-Term Benefits and Defects of a Museum Refurbishment

A museum refurbishment is an extremely complex operation: in addition to substantial funds, it requires the fruitful collaboration of many people with different skills, which, sometimes are not easily reconcilable: scholars, curators, restorers, architects, graphic designers, electricians, etc. It also requires the careful selection of the materials used in the showcases, in the illustrative apparatus, and in the showrooms. In 2008, the old Institute and Museum of the History of Science of Florence was the subject of such an operation, which ended in June 2010 with the “birth” of the Museo Galileo. Almost ten years after the inauguration, the permanent exhibition begins to show strengths and weaknesses from various points of view: fruition by visitors, access to the collections by scholars, care and conservation of objects.
