BIOGRAPHY

Caroline De Stefani graduated from the European Conservation School in Spoleto in 2001. She a researcher at the University in Udine and a consultant for public libraries in Italy until 2006 when she joined the British Library as a book conservator. Caroline completed a PhD in 2007 in book conservation. From 2008 till 2012 she was a paper and book conservation consultant for the Cultural Heritage Board of The Veneto region in Italy. Since 2011 Caroline was appointed conservation studio manager at the London Metropolitan Archives.

ABSTRACT

Displaying of archival documents: the trade-off between accessibility and risk mitigation

Exhibiting archival documents can be quite challenging as they are often fragile and sometimes their display is unavoidable. Exhibitions can have a significant impact in the deterioration of the documents on display. Heat, humidity, light are one of the many factors that can endanger the integrity of the document. This talk will give an overview of the key aspects to consider to reduce the risk of damage and deliver a successful exhibition.
