Description
HIRES, a high resolution spectrograph, for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), is an instrument proposed by a consortium of several institutes from Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom, and which is led by INAF.
I will briefly describe the technical concept of HIRES which, thanks to a modular structure, is able to provide high-resolution spectroscopy (R~100,000) in a wide wavelength range (0.37 to 2.5 μm). HIRES is an instrument capable of providing unique breakthroughs in the fields of exoplanets, intergalactic medium, physics and evolution of stars, and fundamental physics. In this talk, I will concentrate on the expected breakthroughs in the characterization of exoplanets atmospheres, where HIRES is expected to provide revolutionary results.
