Description
We introduce the current uncertainties affecting primary distance indicators and their impact on the calibration of secondary distance indicators, and in turn on the Hubble constant. We will focus our attention on both Cepheid and RR Lyrae distance scales. We also discuss the role played by different diagnostics (Period-Luminosity, Period-Wesenheit relations) to constrain individual distances, and in particular, their dependence on the metal content and on the reddening uncertainties. Finally, we mention pros and cons of optical, near-infrared and mid-infrared photometry to overcome the above uncertainties.
