Galaxies are the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, yet their definition and classification have evolved over time. In this lecture, I will provide a historical perspective on the definition of galaxies, followed by an overview of the Hubble sequence and the main characteristics that distinguish different galaxy types. I will present the evolutionary pathways leading to the blue and...

We always say that we live in the era of large surveys and massive datasets. I will briefly present the case of spectroscopic surveys of stars, in the Milky Way and in its satellites. We will see what is available and how we can use the wealth of observational data, showing some examples. In particular, I will focus on stellar clusters, a sweet spot for astrophysics.
