Description

The exploitation of the full potential of massive amounts of excellent data by ongoing, upcoming and planned astronomical surveys and space missions require innovative developments in information technology.

EDUCADO (Exploring the Deep Universe by Computational Analysis of Data from Observations) is an HORIZON-MSCA Doctoral Network at the intersection of astronomy and computer science, aimed at training 11 doctoral candidates with interdisciplinary and intersectoral data science expertise. The first training school is a week-long series of lectures, covering the topic of Galaxy formation, observing techniques, astro-informatics, and Milky Way structures. The astronomical lectures will be complemented by sessions on gender and diversity awareness, ethics and green computing. The school is open also to a limited number of students from outside the network.

        The fate of galaxies: from morphologies to the co-evolution of black holes and their hosts 1h 30m

        Galaxies are the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, yet their definition and classification have evolved over time. In this lecture, I will provide a historical perspective on the definition of galaxies, followed by an overview of the Hubble sequence and the main characteristics that distinguish different galaxy types. I will present the evolutionary pathways leading to the blue and red sequences, highlighting the role of black holeโ€“galaxy co-evolution. Finally, I will introduce the concepts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and stellar feedback, discussing their impact on galaxy evolution within the framework of cosmological simulations.

        We always say that we live in the era of large surveys and massive datasets. I will briefly present the case of spectroscopic surveys of stars, in the Milky Way and in its satellites. We will see what is available and how we can use the wealth of observational data, showing some examples. In particular, I will focus on stellar clusters, a sweet spot for astrophysics.
