How to get there
By plane
The main airports for reaching Firenze are in Firenze itself (Amerigo Vespucci), Pisa (Galileo Galilei), and Bologna (Guglielmo Marconi).
-
The airport Amerigo Vespucci in Firenze is connected with many European cities, and with the two Italian intercontinental airports (Roma and Milano).
From the airport you can take a taxi to downtown (20 min, ~20 EUR) or to Arcetri (30 min, ~30 EUR). Otherwise, you can get the tramway line T2 from the airport stop (Peretola Aeroporto) to the Santa Maria Novella railway station (Alamanni Stazione stop). Follow this link for more information. -
From Pisa Galileo Galilei airport, you can take the Pisa Mover airport shuttle to reach the main railway station (Pisa Centrale) in about five minutes, and then take a train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (journey time: between 52 minutes and 84 minutes, depending on the train line). See the Trenitalia website for planning your trip.
-
From Bologna Guglielmo Marconi airport, you can get the Marconi Express airport shuttle to the Bologna Centrale railway station, and then take a train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (journey time: 37 minutes). Alternatively, there is a bus service from Bologna airport to Piazzale Montelungo in Firenze, a short walk from Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station.
By train
Get off at Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station. Then, the easiest way to reach the venue is by taxi (around 15-20 minutes in normal traffic conditions, ~20 EUR). You can also take the bus (see below). For train timetables and route planning, please have a look at the Trenitalia website.
By bus
There are two bus lines that take you close to the venue: Line 11 and Line 38. You can buy the tickets before you get on the bus in a "Tabacchi" store (look for blue signs with a white T) or you can pay contactless directly on the bus with your credit card.
-
As for Line 11, get off the bus at the Gelsomino Magalotti stop and walk up Viale del Poggio Imperiale. Then, turn left in Largo Enrico Fermi and you will find the Arcetri's gate on the right side.
-
As for Line 38, a short bus line departing from Porta Romana square, get off the bus at the Fermi stop, and you will see the Arcetri's gate.
Cross the gate, walk up and you will find the venue (Department of Physics and Astronomy "Garbasso building"): it the first building at the top of a flight of steps. To reach the Observatory, continue along the uphill road for about 300 meters.
The best way to consult the available buses to reach the conference venue wherever you are in the city centre is to use the "at bus" app, available for Android and iOS. You can also find a web version.
