MAVIS is a proposed instrument for the ESO’s VLT AOF (Adaptive Optics Facility, UT4 Yepun). MAVIS stands for MCAO Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph. It is intended to be installed at the Nasmyth focus of the VLT AOF and is made of two main parts: an Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) system, pushing AO toward the visible on a large field of view, and its post focal instrumentation, for which the baseline is a 30"x30" imager and an integral field spectrograph(~5"x5"), both covering the visible part of the spectrum at diffraction limit of the VLT.
The instrument is currently in Phase A. The detailed Science Case for MAVIS is currently under active development: after the first MAVIS Science Workshop in November 2017, the call for science white papers last year attracted a lot of interest from all consortium members — and beyond.
The aim of this workshop is to identify the main Science cases within the final instrument configuration sketched above, identifying the science areas were the instrument will represent a significant step forward, and where it will provide unique synergies with existing and forthcoming facilities such as ELT.
