DESCRIPTION:The 3rd edition of the Observing with Adaptive Optics internat
ional school will take place at the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago in
Italy from 25th to 30th of October 2026.\nAlthough still a young initiati
ve\, the school is quickly becoming a highly anticipated event within the
international Adaptive Optics student community. This year\, the school is
moving to Italy and expanding its horizons.\nDuring the school the studen
ts will use EKARUS\, the successor of the PAPYRUS Adaptive Optics testben
ch\, installed in the Coudé room at the Copernico 1.82m telescope.\nThe
students will be involved in all phases of an adaptive-optics assisted ast
ronomical observation. Frontal lessons on the fundamental topics of the di
scipline are planned\, as well as tutoring sessions for the development of
observation preparation\, AO simulation and data analysis tools.\n\nObser
vation of Mars with Papyrus on T152 telescope at OHP\nAudience\nThe summer
school is aimed at two audiences: \n1) young astronomers who in their ca
reers will primarily use adaptive optics-assisted instruments and are inte
rested in understanding the strengths and limitations of adaptive optics i
nstruments\n2) young technologists who will develop the next generation ad
aptive optics systems and are interested in understanding how an adaptive
astronomical observation is carried out\, from preparation to data analysi
 s.   \n\nOptical scheme of Ekarus\nTopics\nThe tentative list of topics
that will be addressed is the following:  \n\nImaging and IFU spectrosc
opy with an AO-assisted instrument\nGeometrical and diffractive optics for
  ground-based telescopes\nImage formation through the atmosphere\nFundamen
tals of Control Theory for astronomical AO \nWavefront sensing in AO for
astronomy\nWavefront reconstruction in AO for astronomy\nAO system design\
nImage deconvolution in astronomy: PSF reconstruction\,  PSF modeling & f
itting\nBeyond general-purpose AO or how to address the specific limitatio
ns of AO: High contrast / Wide field / Laser assisted AO\nReal life exampl
es of AO-assisted instrument development\n\n\n\nApplication of AI in AO\n\
n\nCost and accomodation\nThe students will be hosted at the Asiago Observ
atory facilities. The number of students will be limited to about 25. \nA
part from travel to/from Padova\, all other expenses will be covered by th
e organization.  The organization provides a shuttle bus from/to Padova t
rain station on the days of arrival and departure\n \nImportant dates\n\n
 27 Apr 2026  - Registration Open\n12 Jun 2026 - Registration closed\n29 J
