INAF))\, Marcella Brusa (Universita' di Bologna & INAF-OAS)\, Alessio Mucc
 iarelli (DIFA - University of Bologna)\n\n\nJune 18th-20th\, 2025\nThe pro
gramme is now available!\n \nYou can follow the Conference online at the

 zebologna/it/agenda/celebrazione-quarto-centenario-cassini-international-w
orkshop \nOn the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Giovann
i Domenico Cassini\, born in Perinaldo (Italy) on 8 June 1625\, we would l
ike to remember the most illustrious astronomer of his time: his studies h
ad such an impact beyond national borders that in 1669 the Sun King\, Loui
s XIV\, asked him to found the Observatoire de Paris\, the first modern as
tronomical observatory. \nThe main Italian cultural and research Institut
ions associated with Cassini – the University of Bologna\, the National
Institute for Astrophysics\, the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of B
ologna – together with local administration\, supported the request to t
he Ministry of Culture to create a national committee to celebrate the gre
at astronomer in 2025.\nAmong the activities promoted by the committee is
the international conference "Giovanni Domenico Cassini\, 17th century Eur
opean astronomer on the fourth centenary of his birth"\, which aims to giv
e historians and scientists the opportunity to discuss and analyse in-dept
h the Cassini era\, a historical period marked by a great acceleration in
the progress of science and astronomy. New ideas\, new instruments\, new m
ethods\, including the open exchange of information and cooperation betwee
n scientists even across national borders\, made it possible to make impor
tant discoveries about the Solar System – the whole universe as it was t
hen known. The process was faster than in the past\, and all this was surr
ounded by a general cultural context of great ferment.\nThe conference wil
l be accompanied by a series of events aimed at student and general public
\, culminating in a day dedicated to observing the sun from Piazza Maggior
e in Bologna\, with guided visits to the Great Meridian of San Petronio on
21 June. The summer solstice of 2025 will be 370 years after the day on w
hich Cassini invited professors of mathematics and philosophy and other cu
rios citizen to witness the start of the construction of his “eliometro
”.\nTopics for discussion will include:\n- Cassini and his era: society\
, scientists and authority\,\n- From the Republic of Letters to the Europe
an scientific network of Academies\,\n- Cassini's cosmos: visions of the S
olar System from the seventeenth century up today\,\n- Observations of Mar
 s\, Jupiter\, Saturn\,\n- Cassini\, Halley and the comets\,\n- Cassini and
the telescopes of the seventeenth century\,\n- Cassini between heaven and
earth: the Pope's engineer and the King's cartographer\,\n- Cassini in Bo
logna: the ephemerides and the great meridian line in San Petronio\,\n- Ca
ssini at the court of the Sun King.\n \nConfirmed speakers include: Fabri
zio Bònoli (University of Bologna)\, Ileana Chinnici (INAF-Palermo Astron
omical Observatory\, President of the Scientific Instrument Commission SIC
)\, Luca Ciotti (University of Bologna\, former Director of the Collegio S
 uperiore)\, Giorgio Strano (Curator\, Museo Galileo\, Florence)\, and Walt
er Tega (University of Bologna\, former President of the Academy of Scienc
es).\n \nOral contributions are welcome in English\, Italian\, and French
. English text on slides is encouraged for wider audience understanding.\n
